People of Hope: Catholic Charities Brings National Community Service Storytelling Initiative to Chemung County

ELMIRA, NY – Catholic Charities Diocese of Rochester is joining Catholic Charities agencies across the United States to host People of Hope: Faith Filled Stories of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a traveling museum that amplifies the transformative impact of Christian service. The People of Hope Museum will be free and open to the public at two locations in the Diocese of Rochester in May 2026.

The mobile museum will be open:
• May 4, 2026 at St. Mary Our Mother Church, 816 West Broad Street, Horseheads, NY from 12:30pm – 4:30pm for the public.
• May 7, 2026 at St. Marianne Cope Parish at Guardian Angels Church, 2061 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 10am – 6pm for the public.

Bishop John Bonnici will open the museum and welcome guests both days at 10am.

The mobile museum celebrates the hope that Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester brings to over 100,000 people in our communities every year. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about needs in our community, and to experience compelling stories about neighbors in need and the Catholic Charities staff who bring love and hope to them.

One of the featured stories comes from our Catholic Charities Chemung/Schuyler agency, highlighting local impact within the broader national movement. LaFrance Supervisor, Lisa Appleby, shares a local Elmira story as part of the museum experience.

Housed inside a customized 53-foot tractor trailer, the People of Hope Museum is an immersive experience featuring more than 40 professionally produced video stories of Catholic Charities staff and volunteers from across the country sharing meaningful encounters with individuals and families facing hardship.

In addition to the video storytelling gallery, visitors can:
• Participate in an interactive poverty simulation, stepping into another person’s life to better understand the daily realities of living on the margins
• Visit a recording studio to share their own stories of hope, service, and faith
• Explore an audio library featuring short excerpts from seminal works on poverty, social isolation, bridge building, and community action
• Engage with national and state data illustrating the scope of need and the vital role of social service organizations

This local work reflects the shared mission of Catholic Charities agencies nationwide to honor the dignity of every person and respond to the Gospel call to serve those most in need.
The People of Hope Museum launched its national tour in March and will travel the United States for two and a half years. The initiative is made possible through a 2024 grant of nearly $5 million from Lilly Endowment Inc., awarded through its National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life.

Hope is Coming: People of Hope Museum Coming to the Diocese of Rochester

Catholic Charities USA is launching an inspiring new initiative, People of Hope, a nationwide mobile storytelling exhibit debuting in spring 2026. Supported by a major grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the exhibit brings to life the real stories of volunteers, staff, and community members whose everyday acts of service reflect faith, compassion, and human connection. Through immersive audio and visual experiences, People of Hope celebrates how helping others transforms both those who serve and those they serve.

Housed inside a retrofitted tractor trailer, the exhibit invites visitors to listen to powerful, professionally recorded stories and even record their own reflections on service, hope, and transformation. Research shows many people feel called to help but aren’t sure how to begin. People of Hope bridges that gap by showing how meaningful, accessible, and fulfilling volunteering can be—and how service builds lasting relationships and stronger communities.

We’re excited that People of Hope will visit our region as part of its national tour, stopping in Chemung County on May 4, at St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, and Rochester on May 7, at St. Marianne Cope Parish at Guardian Angels Church. This free, family friendly experience offers a chance to reflect, listen, and add your own story to a growing national tapestry of hope. Learn more about the People of Hope exhibit by visiting the People of Hope page on our website.

Catholic Charities Hosts Successful 21st Empty Bowls Luncheon

ELMIRA, NY – Catholic Charities is thrilled to announce the success of the 21st Empty Bowls Luncheon, that was held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Notre Dame High School. This year’s event, the largest fundraiser for The Samaritan Center, raised over $30,000 to support local poverty relief efforts. Over the past twenty years, the Empty Bowls Luncheon has raised over $404,000, making a significant impact on our community.

Generous sponsorship from The Hilliard Corporation, Kennedy Valve, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Community Bank, Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, Gough Holding, Stewart Advisory Services, Southern Tier Custom Fabricators, Visions Federal Credit Union, Wegmans, and other local sponsors helped make this year’s event possible. The Empty Bowls Luncheon is unique, featuring handmade, commemorative bowls created by local potters. Guests also enjoyed delicious homemade soup provided by Barb & Mark McClure, owners of Barb’s Soup’s On Cafe in Elmira.

The Empty Bowls Luncheon featured delicious soup, a brief presentation, raffles and an award presentation. The Longwell-McClure Award is named after Chris Longwell, Associate Professor of Art at Elmira College and Barb and Mark McClure, Owners of Barb’s Soup’s On. As the first recipients of the award, Catholic Charities honored Chris as an individual who had supported Catholic Charities as well as the McClure’s as a business who had supported in unique and impactful ways over the years.

Professor Longwell has been making bowls for this luncheon for the last 21 years and was instrumental in starting this fundraising event at Elmira College where it was held until 2022 when the event moved to Notre Dame. The McClures have been providing soup for this luncheon since the beginning, even providing to-go soup during the virtual Empty Bowls that was held due to COVID.

As a tribute to Professor Longwell and the McClures, Cindy Fuller and Corning Federal Credit Union were recognized for their dedication to our community.

Beautiful bowls were created and donated by the following:
• Colleen McCall Ceramics
• David Webster’s Pottery
• Elmira College Students and Chris Longwell
• Horseheads High School Students and Cynthia Cratsley
• Kettle Creek Pottery, Amy Manson
• Mary Purdy

Notre Dame students helped prepare for the event and assisted with serving throughout the luncheon. It was a wonderful combination of delicious food, beautiful bowls, a meaningful cause, and—most importantly—the generous partners who support our mission.

The Samaritan Center operates a food pantry five days a week, providing food, personal hygiene items, diapers, and wipes. Volunteers serve guests daily. If you’re interested in volunteering, please visit the Catholic Charities website to sign up. If you would like to make a donation to help Catholic Charities exceed their fundraising goal, you may visit their website.

State and Local Officials Highlight Expanded Child Tax Credit and Free Tax Help for Albany Families

Empire State Child Credit Offers Up to $1,000 Per Child Under Age Four
Free Tax Assistance Available Through April 15 to Help Families Claim Benefits

ALBANY, NY — The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), joined by the United Way of the Greater Capital Region’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and Albany-area elected officials, today highlighted the State’s expanded Empire State Child Credit and reminded families that free income tax filing assistance is still available throughout Albany and the Capital Region.

Eligible families can receive up to $1,000 per child under age four and up to $330 per child ages four through 16 under the expanded Empire State Child Credit. While there is no minimum income required to receive the credit, households must file a New York State income tax return by April 15 in order to claim it.

The expanded Empire State Child Credit will provide a much-needed boost to household budgets for millions of families across New York State, especially those with little or no income,” said OTDA Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn. “But families need to know they must file a New York State income tax return to receive the money—and that doing so will not affect other benefits such as SNAP or Medicaid. The Capital Region VITA program makes it easy for families to file for free and receive every tax credit they qualify for.”

Who Is Eligible for the Empire State Child Credit?

Families may be eligible for the Empire State Child Credit if they:

  • Are full-year New York State residents
  • Have at least one qualifying child under age 17
  • File a New York State income tax return
  • Provide a valid Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for themselves and each qualifying child

The amount of the credit varies based on household income, number of children, and the age of each child.

Free Tax Help Available Through the United Way’s VITA Program

The United Way of the Greater Capital Region’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free, trusted tax preparation and filing services for households earning:

  • Less than $69,000 per year, or
  • Less than $39,000 per year for households without dependents

IRS-certified volunteers assist families at multiple locations throughout the Capital Region to ensure they receive all federal and state tax credits for which they qualify. In 2025 alone, VITA volunteers helped file more than 6,000 tax returns in the region.

Leaders Emphasize Importance of Filing by April 15

Representative Paul Tonko noted the importance of awareness and access.
“Expanded tax credits like the Empire State Child Credit help families keep up with rising costs—but they only make a difference if families can claim them. Programs like VITA ensure New Yorkers can file their taxes easily and receive every credit they’ve earned.”

State Senator Patricia Fahy emphasized relief for working families.
“New York families are struggling with unrelenting affordability pressures. This expanded tax credit—up to $1,000 for young children—is an investment in families who need it most, and I encourage every eligible household to file by April 15.”

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy added,
“For families raising young kids, every dollar counts. The expanded Child Credit can help cover essentials like groceries, child care, and bills. Free, trusted resources like VITA are still available, and we want every eligible family to get what they’re owed.”

Peter Gannon, President and CEO of United Way of the Greater Capital Region, said,
“Financial stability starts with access to resources. With rising costs and stagnant incomes, New York’s expanded Child Tax Credit can make a real difference. Our goal is to ensure no family misses out on money that could help them stay afloat.”

Additional Tax Credits Available

In addition to the Empire State Child Credit, eligible households may also qualify for federal and state tax credits that can provide thousands of dollars in additional support, including:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Federal Child Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit
  • Federal and state child and dependent care credits

To receive federal tax credits, households must also file a federal income tax return by April 15.

Receiving these tax credits will not impact eligibility for Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, cash assistance, or housing assistance.

Largest Expansion of the Child Credit in State History

Last year, Governor Kathy Hochul and the State Legislature enacted the largest expansion of the Empire State Child Credit in New York history. Key changes include:

  • Increasing the credit to $1,000 per child under age four and $330 per child ages four through 16 for the 2026 tax filing season
  • Eliminating restrictions that prevented the lowest-income families from receiving the full credit as a refund
  • Expanding eligibility to more middle-class families through a gradual phase-out
  • Doubling the average credit from $472 to $943
  • Increasing the credit for children ages four through 16 to up to $500 per child beginning next year, while maintaining the $1,000 maximum for children under age four

Catholic Charities Conducts Unsheltered Count 2026

ELMIRA, NY – Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler will be leading interviews with the public to measure homelessness in our community. The interviews will be focused on where individuals slept during one specific “point-in-time,” Thursday, January 22, 2026.
This Point-In-Time Study (PIT) will be conducted in a five-county region and is part of US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) funding and in partnership with CARES, Inc.

A Point-In-Time Study is a coordinated effort within a specific region to count the number of people experiencing homelessness during a specific one-day point in time. HUD requests this information to better understand and address homelessness at a national level. Because of this PIT Study, federal funds could be used to address homeless issues specifically within our region. Therefore, Catholic Charities’ funding is directly tied to the completion of this study.

Suzi Fritz, Director of Emergency Services states, “It is important to draw attention to the funding needs of our communities to ensure service availability for our most vulnerable neighbors.”

Catholic Charities’ Staff will be organizing interviews in Chemung and Schuyler Counties utilizing the help of community organizations, non-profits, and local food pantries. If you think you know where individuals are staying who might be homeless, please call 607-734-4898 during business hours and leave a message with the location. After hours, please call 607-732-5954.

In 2025, there were 771 distinct individuals who experienced homelessness and received services in Chemung County (211 individuals were under the age of 18). In Schuyler County, 53 individuals experiencing homelessness received services.

Catholic Charities, in partnership with the Department of Social Services, is operating the Warming Station and the Homeless Shelter at 160 High Street in Elmira, NY. Anyone in need of shelter or a place to get warm is welcome to come to the Homeless Shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Individuals can meet with staff to find out what options are available for them. Meals and coffee are provided as well as warm clothing, hats and gloves as needed. Anyone in need of the Warming Station is able to come inside without the need to complete paperwork.

For community members interested in helping, Catholic Charities is specifically in need of grocery gift cards, personal hygiene items, hats, gloves, hand/feet warmers and bus tokens.

Donations of items may be sent to Catholic Charities’ Samaritan Center (380 S Main St, Elmira, NY), Monday-Friday from 8:30 am—4:00 pm or The Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry (112 10th St, Watkins Glen, NY) Tuesday & Friday: 9 am—2 pm, Thursday: Noon—4 pm. Monetary donations may be made online at www.CatholicCharitiesCS.org (designate Homeless Services) or you may mail a check to 215 East Church Street, Elmira, NY 14901.

Catholic Charities January Newsletter

Human Trafficking Prevention Month: Stronger Connections. Stronger Futures.

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to rase awareness and take action to prevent human trafficking in our communities. This year’s theme, “Stronger Connections. Stronger Futures.” reminds us that our everyday connections play a vital role in preventing human trafficking. Strong, supportive relationships at home, at work, and in our communities help protect people from human trafficking and other forms of abuse. When individuals are supported, valued, and connected to the community, it is harder for traffickers to isolate, manipulate, or control them. Family members, friends, coworkers, and community members can notice when something doesn’t seem right and help connect people to support and resources.

Throughout January, be intentional about deepening connections with people in your daily life – check in, listen, and build trust. Together we can help create a future free from human trafficking.

How you can engage this month:
– Share information about Human Trafficking Prevention Month with your networks.
– Promote resources that support safety, stability, and well-being.
– Encourage conversations with children and youth about human trafficking, healthy relationships, safe boundaries, and finding the right balance between screen time and time with family and friends.

Stay informed throughout January by visiting the Office of Trafficking in Persons’ website for news, resources and events, or view our Safe Harbour page.

January is Poverty Awareness Month

Poverty Awareness Month

Catholic teaching urges that we continually call on our elected officials to prioritize policies that protect the poor and most vulnerable. In 2025, the US Catholic Bishops addressed components of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act insisting that it will have ongoing and devastating consequences for the poorest people in our country. The federal bill cut funding for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) which will result in millions going hungry, while cuts to Medicaid could cause 10 million people to lose their health insurance over the next decade according to reports from the Congressional Budget Office.

One way we can stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need is by advocating for just national policies. Challenge: Call our Congressman Nick Langworthy at (607) 377-3130 or contact him through his website and ask him to help lift vulnerable families out of poverty by strengthening food assistance and other federal safety net programs to ensure adequate funding for programs that promote the common good.

Catholic Charities of Chemung & Schuyler Requests Christmas Donations

As the holiday season approaches, Catholic Charities is inviting community members and organizations to help spread Christmas cheer to local families in Chemung and Schuyler Counties. This year’s program offers several meaningful ways to get involved and make a difference.

Adopt a Family for Christmas
Participants can adopt a local family by completing a short form on Catholic Charities’ website indicating how many families they would like to shop for. Wish lists will be provided by staff, and donors are asked to deliver new, unwrapped gifts by December 4. Donors will be given a specific drop-off at the beginning of December, and any gifts can be dropped off during regular business hours on the date given to them.

To accommodate families staying in motels or safehouses, gifts should be delivered in a storage tote (no larger than 31 gallons) to help with organization and storage. Volunteers will wrap the gifts and label them to maintain confidentiality, and staff will handle delivery.

Additional Ways to Help
Host a Drive – Collect warm items such as hats, gloves, and coats (especially men’s and children’s sizes). Items should be new and unwrapped and delivered by December 30.

Donate Wrapping Supplies – wrapping paper, tape, gift bags, tissue paper, and gift boxes are always needed to prepare gifts for adopted families.

Provide Gift Cards – Cards to local restaurants, grocery stores, or for transportation (gas or bus tokens) are welcome.

Make a Monetary Donation – Financial contributions help meet urgent local needs during the holiday season.
